Gideon Welles School Philosophy

The Gideon Welles School Community prides itself in providing an academically rigorous program and supporting our students and their families as they transition from elementary education to secondary education. Gideon Welles School provides a comprehensive curriculum to support the social, emotional, and cognitive growth of the early adolescent sixth grade learner.

Gideon Welles School begins the transition from the elementary education model to secondary education for our sixth grade students. Students are divided into four heterogeneous teams and attend all five academic subjects (foreign language, English, math, science, social studies) within their team. All students also receive instruction in technology, art, music, and physical education. Our teachers assist students in preparing for the middle school by fostering strategies to support their independence, organization, and goal setting. Gideon Welles' faculty is dedicated to providing a program that challenges student's and brings wonder and excitement into the classroom each day.

The faculty integrates technology as an instructional tool to enhance lessons and provide depth of exploration within the curriculum. Technology is incorporated to aide in research, design presentations, and improve keyboarding skills. These skills are integral for student's continued academic success as they live and learn in this digital age.

Our expert faculty and staff utilize various techniques to differentiate instruction. These techniques afford all students opportunities to excel within our curriculum. Health and drug awareness is provided through the DARE (Drug Awareness and Resistance Education) program. A daily enrichment period provides students additional opportunities to develop social, emotional, and cognitive skills. Exploring the Arts is a weekly program that includes all students. Various artists from all disciplines share their abilities with our students during these weekly assemblies. A school wide theme to enhance leadership and character development thorough the inclusion of consistent language throughout the school further fosters each students experience in our safe and caring learning community.

The home/school partnership remains an essential element in our students education. Communication is encouraged and parents receive communication eight times a year to update them on their students effort and academic standing. Each student is assigned a homeroom teacher who also serves as another means of fostering this partnership. The Gideon Welles community is a tight knit team that provides an organizational structure, activities, learning experiences, and programs that are essential to the effective transition of sixth graders from elementary to secondary education, while establishing the skills essential to prepare them for their role as tomorrow's leaders.
